The Green Man is Watching Us | |
|
The "Green Man" has inspired humankind for thousands of years. This spirit, which is said to inhabit and enervate the forests of the Earth, is believed to care for the ecology of the Earth, to provide for humans and other creatures, and to communicate with those who have the ears to listen.
Do you see him in the quilt? Look at his eyes... Are those 'tears' dropping? In this quilted wall hanging, Leigh captures the spirit of the "Green Man" in over a thousand pieces of fabric. A very three-dimensional quilt, the trunk and major limbs of the grandfather tree are highly textured. Butterflies, flowers, stones and beads embellish the quilt as well. At night, a crescent moon, stars, fireflies, pixies and a fairyring glow in the dark. 40 inches by 50 inches Leigh C. Griffith copyright 2001 |
"The Green Man is Watching Us." The Green Man is watching us. He's more patient than I Standing so silent I almost pass by. Sudden leaf-rattle laughter Floats high on the air. Lets me know that He knows That I know He's there. The Green Man is watching us. He is quicker than eye. One blink - pop! - He's gone, I turn and I sigh. Wind-scuttled wavelets Float on the pond, Let me know that He knows That I know He's gone. The Green Man is watching us Our fates are as one, Entwined as the vines That climb to the sun. Don't rush through the forest. Slow down, still your mind. Peer into the small spaces, You might see an eye (or an ear, or a lip) Listen to His music, His laughter, His sighs. Feel the woods thrumming As He passes by. He's there where the squirrels romp And lazy bees drone. The Green Man is watching us, We're never alone. |
